“In 2014, Lamar Richardson turned down a summer internship at Barclays to pursue a career in theatre. Twelve years later, that decision helped lead him to Broadway history.
At 33, Richardson became the youngest Black lead producer to win in one of the Tony Awards’ major production categories, earning the distinction through the 2026 Best Revival of a Musical winner, Ragtime.
The Antiguan-American producer, who graduated from Columbia University in 2015, was part of the team behind the celebrated revival. The production won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical at the ceremony on June 7, 2026.
Richardson’s achievement also placed him among a small group of Black lead producers to win in a top Tony production category, following Ken Harper, Oprah Winfrey and Glenn Davis.
His journey reflects a willingness to choose a less predictable path, invest in a creative vision and build a career in an industry where access and representation have not always been equal.
For Richardson, the milestone is more than a personal victory. It is another reminder that Black creatives continue to shape Broadway not only onstage, but also in the decisions that bring productions to life.
