Jackie Ormes made history as the first Black woman cartoonist in the United States. Beginning in the 1930s, her bold characters and sharp social commentary appeared in prominent Black newspapers, challenging racism, sexism, and stereotypes long before mainstream media caught up.
Through series like Torchy Brown and Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger, Ormes portrayed stylish, intelligent, and politically aware Black women — reshaping how Black life was illustrated on the page.
Her pen wasn’t just artistic — it was revolutionary.
