10-Year-Old Deaf Actor From Maryland Breaks Barriers With Emmy Nomination

A young actor from Maryland just made television history.

Keivonn Woodard, known for his role as Sam in HBO’s hit series The Last of Us, became the first Black deaf actor to receive an Emmy nomination.

At just 11 years old when the nomination was announced, Woodard was also the youngest nominee ever in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category.

His performance stood out not only for its emotional depth, but also for its authenticity — Woodard is deaf in real life, just like the character he portrayed on screen.

For many viewers, his nomination represents more than an award. It’s a powerful moment for representation in Hollywood, highlighting the importance of opportunities for actors from underrepresented communities.
