Before there was a Black Barbie, there was Julia.
In 1969, Mattel released the Julia Doll — one of the first mass-market Black fashion dolls in U.S. history, inspired by actress Diahann Carroll and her groundbreaking role on the TV show Julia.
At a time when Black representation in media was nearly nonexistent, this doll gave little Black girls something rare:
✨ a face that looked like theirs
✨ a style that reflected their culture
✨ and a spirit that broke the mold
Julia wasn’t just a toy — she was representation during a decade that desperately needed it.
A piece of history worth remembering. 🖤
