Skai Jackson Reveals She Pushed Disney To Let Her Wear Her Natural Hair For Young Black Girls Watching

Skai Jackson is speaking openly about the behind-the-scenes pushback she faced while working with Disney over how she wore her hair.

The former Disney star said she had to be “very strong” about wanting to wear her natural hair, twist-outs, and braids on screen. She explained that representation mattered to her because she wanted young Black girls watching to see someone who looked like them embracing their natural hair.

When Bunk’d introduced a summer-camp storyline, Jackson recalled pushing back when producers initially hesitated about allowing her character to wear braids. She ultimately stood her ground, saying that if her character was at camp, she was going to wear braids.

Her story is a reminder that representation isn’t just about being on screen. It’s also about being able to show up as yourself once you’re there.

And sometimes, changing what’s considered “normal” starts with one person simply saying, “This is who I am.” ✨
