New York State’s minimum wage is set to rise today, with hourly pay increasing to $17 in New York City, Westchester County, and Long Island, according to reports. Workers in the rest of the state will see the minimum wage climb to $16 per hour.
The increase is part of the state’s ongoing effort to address rising living costs, particularly in high-expense regions, and follows previous incremental wage hikes approved by lawmakers. While supporters argue the move offers necessary relief for low-wage workers, critics continue to raise concerns about its impact on small businesses and regional affordability.
The wage adjustment will take effect today, January 1.
