Sweden is redefining healthcare by prescribing travel instead of pills.
Under a new initiative known as the Swedish Prescription, doctors can now formally recommend experiences such as nature walks, forest stays, saunas, cold plunges, and time outdoors to help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Developed with researchers from the Karolinska Institute, the approach emphasizes prevention, balance, and holistic health—recognizing that healing doesn’t always begin in a pharmacy.
While trips aren’t covered by insurance, the message is clear: sometimes recovery starts with rest, movement, and nature.
