In Brazil, Reading Can Reduce a Prisoner’s Sentence — Here’s How the Program Works. 📚🇧🇷
Brazil offers inmates the opportunity to shorten their prison terms through a federal initiative known as Remissão pela Leitura (“remission by reading”). Under the program, prisoners can reduce their sentence by four days for every approved book they read and write a report on, up to twelve books per year—a maximum reduction of 48 days annually.
Introduced in 2012 under Brazil’s Criminal Enforcement Act, the initiative applies to selected works of literature, philosophy, science, and classics. Reports are reviewed to ensure inmates truly engaged with the material and demonstrated comprehension.
Beyond reducing overcrowding, the program aims to promote literacy, critical thinking, and rehabilitation, offering inmates a constructive way to spend their time and supporting their reintegration into society.
