Angola Opens Its First Vehicle Assembly Plant — Big Boost for Africa’s Auto Industry

Angola Just Took a Major Step Into the Global Auto Industry.

For the first time in its history, Angola has opened an active vehicle assembly plant in Luanda — a move signaling a new chapter for Africa’s industrial future. Led by Opaia Motors, the facility is expected to produce up to 22,000 cars and 1,000 buses annually, reducing reliance on imports while reviving domestic manufacturing.

Passenger vehicles will initially be sourced from China, with buses imported from Sweden’s Volvo, but the long-term vision is bigger: exports, job creation, and eventually electric vehicle production.

This isn’t just a factory opening — it’s a strategic shift toward industrial self-sufficiency and economic diversification on the continent.
