After 137 years, recognition finally arrives.
The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has secured full federal recognition following more than a century of advocacy, legal battles, and perseverance. The milestone affirms the tribe’s political status and opens access to critical federal resources, including healthcare, housing, education, and expanded self-governance—rights long denied despite the Lumbee being one of the largest tribes east of the Mississippi.
For the Lumbee people, the decision marks not just a policy change, but a long-overdue acknowledgment of identity, sovereignty, and history.
