“Before Chadwick Boseman became a global star as T’Challa in Black Panther, someone had already invested in his future without asking for recognition.
In 1998, while studying at Howard University, Boseman was accepted into a summer acting program at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. But he and several fellow students faced a financial barrier that threatened their opportunity to attend.
Their mentor, actress and professor Phylicia Rashad, reached out to people who could help. One of those people was Denzel Washington, who privately contributed toward the students’ expenses, including Boseman’s tuition.
Years later, Boseman discovered who had helped fund his education. In 2019, while honoring Washington at the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award ceremony, he publicly expressed his gratitude.
“There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington,” Boseman said, recognizing the lasting influence of Washington’s generosity and the example he had set for a new generation of Black performers.
The story is a reminder that support offered quietly can have an impact far beyond what anyone can see at the time.
Sometimes, changing a life begins with giving someone access to an opportunity they could not afford on their own.
