“Meet Herman J. Russell, the visionary Black entrepreneur who transformed a small business into one of America’s most successful Black-owned construction and real estate enterprises.
Founded in Atlanta in 1952, H. J. Russell & Company grew into a powerhouse that helped build some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and State Farm Arena.
But Russell’s legacy extended far beyond construction.
He was also a philanthropist, civic leader, and supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. He used his business influence and resources to support activists, create opportunities, and help open doors for other Black entrepreneurs.
His story reminds us that building a business can mean more than generating wealth. It can mean creating jobs, strengthening communities, and paving the way for generations to come.
He didn’t just help build Atlanta’s skyline. He helped build opportunities for others to rise.
