Ghana has been advocating at the United Nations for stronger international recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as one of history’s most devastating crimes against humanity.
Former Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama has spoken about the initiative, which has received backing from members of the African Union, calling for deeper acknowledgment of the lasting global impact of slavery.
Historians estimate that over several centuries, millions of Africans were forcibly transported across the Atlantic during the slave trade, leaving a legacy that continues to shape societies around the world.
The proposal is part of broader international discussions surrounding historical accountability, remembrance, and justice.
