“At an age when most children are discovering their favorite cartoons and learning basic arithmetic, Declan Lopez was already exploring atomic weights, physics, mathematics, and geography.
The New Jersey kindergartner made headlines in 2023 after becoming one of the youngest members of Mensa, an international society for people who score within the top 2% on qualifying intelligence tests.
Her reported IQ score ranged from 137 to 138 across different news reports.
But what makes Declan’s story especially fascinating is her curiosity.
During an interview with CNN, she surprised the reporter by asking about the atomic mass of tennessine, a synthetic element on the periodic table.
She was also reportedly reading at a third- or fourth-grade level while still in kindergarten.
And despite her extraordinary academic abilities, Declan remained a child with big dreams. She talked about becoming a singer, fashion designer, and even an astronomer.
Her parents, Meachel and Delano Lopez, worked to nurture her interests through structured learning activities while making sure she had time to play, socialize, and enjoy childhood.
Her story is a beautiful reminder that intelligence can show itself in many ways and that children’s curiosity deserves to be encouraged, not limited by expectations.
A brilliant mind, a big imagination, and plenty of room to dream.
