Twelve years ago, doctors told actress Lupita Nyong’o she had tumors growing inside her uterus.
The smallest were the size of blueberries. The largest — an orange.
They were uterine fibroids, non-cancerous tumors that grow in and around the uterus and affect millions of women worldwide. Studies suggest up to 70–80% of women may develop fibroids by age 50, yet many suffer symptoms like severe pain, heavy bleeding, or fertility challenges with little public discussion or research funding.
After more than a decade of living with the condition privately, Nyong’o is now speaking out — launching #MakeFibroidsCount, a campaign supporting research for less-invasive treatments and greater awareness.
Through a partnership with @foundationwomenshealth, the initiative will fund scientists working to better understand and treat fibroids.
Because when a condition affects millions of women, silence shouldn’t be the status quo.
