At 82, Marie Wilcox realized she carried an entire language alone. She was the last fluent speaker of Wukchumni, a Native American language from California that had never been written down. When she understood that her death would mean its extinction, she made an extraordinary choice.
With no prior computer experience, Wilcox taught herself to type, then spent nearly seven years painstakingly recording her language word by word, meaning by meaning. Working almost daily, she transformed memory into permanence, creating a 6,000-word dictionary so future generations would still hear the voices of their ancestors.
