Jay-Z’s $5.4B Times Square Casino Proposal Rejected — SL Green CEO Reacts To 4-2 Community Vote: “What You Did Was Despicable…”

Jay-Z’s $5.4B Casino for Times Square Just Got Shut Down. According to the Associated Press, a six-person community advisory committee voted 4–2 against the massive casino proposal backed by SL Green, Caesars, and Roc Nation — officially killing the project. The vote took place just steps away from where the casino would have been built.

“What you did here today was a despicable display of cowardice, lack of leadership, lack of consideration for all the people who would benefit from this proposal.” – SL Green CEO Marc Holliday (abc 7)

Holliday confronted committee members and called their move “despicable,” saying the team met every standard and then some.

Both the Caesars Palace Times Square and Avenir at Hudson Yards were rejected in separate votes.

Supporters say the casino would have brought jobs, tourism, and billions in tax revenue. Critics, especially in the Broadway community, argued it would disrupt the theater district and harm the area’s culture.

Should Roc Nation and SL Green pitch the casino idea in another borough?
