Grandmothers Provide Free Mental Health Therapy In Zimbabwe Benches

How tech-savvy grandmothers are driving initiative to promote mental health - TechCabal

“In Zimbabwe, a simple wooden bench is helping change how people access mental health support.

When psychiatrist Dr. Dixon Chibanda recognized the barriers preventing many people from receiving professional care, he helped develop an innovative solution: train community grandmothers to offer structured talk therapy and problem-solving support.

Launched in 2006, the Friendship Bench brings mental health support closer to the people who need it. Sitting on a bench in a familiar community setting can feel less intimidating than entering a clinic, making it easier for people to share their struggles.

These grandmothers are not simply lending an ear. They receive training to help people work through challenges, manage emotional distress, and seek additional care when needed.

And the idea has traveled far beyond Zimbabwe. The Friendship Bench model has expanded internationally, with programs in countries including Malawi, Jordan, and Vietnam, as well as in New York and Washington, D.C.

The initiative is a powerful reminder that addressing mental health requires more than hospitals and specialists. It also takes community, compassion, culturally relevant care, and people willing to listen.

Sometimes, meaningful change begins with a simple seat and someone who is ready to hear your story. 💚
