Florida Proposes Bill Requiring Cursive Writing for Students in Grades 2-5 Starting 2026-2027

A new proposal in the Florida House would require all students from grades 2–5 to master cursive writing — and be officially tested on it starting in the 2026–2027 school year.

While cursive is already part of the state’s standards, it’s never been something students had to prove they could do. If passed, this bill would change that, ensuring every student can confidently read and write cursive by the end of fifth grade.

Supporters say it strengthens literacy, cognitive development, and students’ connection to historical documents. Critics say it adds even more pressure to young learners.

What do you think — should cursive make a full comeback in schools?
