Inside Muammar Gadaffi’s All-Female Bodyguard Unit

Often referred to as the “Amazonian Guard,” this all-female unit served as part of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s personal security detail for decades. The guards were trained in weapons, combat, and protection tactics, and were frequently seen accompanying him during public appearances and international visits.

Gaddafi claimed the unit symbolised female empowerment and loyalty, challenging traditional gender roles in the region. However, accounts from former members and investigations after 2011 revealed a more complex reality, with some women describing strict control, limited freedom, and pressure within the system.

Following the fall of Gaddafi’s government in 2011, many former guards disappeared from public view, leaving behind a legacy shaped by politics, symbolism, and the realities of life inside one of Africa’s most closely guarded regimes.
