Hattie McDaniel made history in 1940 as the first Black person to win an Oscar — yet the night she broke barriers, segregation tried to break her spirit.
Because of the hotel’s “No Blacks” policy, she wasn’t allowed to sit with her own castmates from Gone With the Wind. Only after her agent pulled strings was she permitted to sit at a small table tucked away at the back of the room.
Still, she stood tall. Still, she claimed her moment.
And despite the discrimination she faced, Hattie McDaniel became a symbol of resilience, talent, and history rewritten.
