1989 Flo Jo Florence Griffith Joyner Barbie Doll

“Before celebrity-inspired dolls became commonplace, Olympic legend Florence Griffith Joyner, famously known as Flo-Jo, had her very own fashion doll released in 1989.

Following her extraordinary performance at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where she captured three gold medals and one silver, Flo-Jo became one of the most recognizable athletes in the world.

But it wasn’t just her speed that made her unforgettable.

Her colorful, self-designed running outfits, flowing hair, and famously long, painted fingernails turned her into a fashion and pop-culture icon.

Recognizing her influence, toy manufacturer LJN released the Flo-Jo fashion doll in 1989.

The 11.5-inch doll captured her signature style, complete with a pink-and-turquoise athletic outfit, accessories, and colorful nail stickers.

Flo-Jo even helped promote the doll at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

It was more than a toy. It celebrated a Black woman whose athletic achievements and unapologetic individuality challenged expectations of what a female athlete could look like.

Her legacy extended beyond the track, inspiring generations to embrace their individuality, confidence, and creativity.

She was fast, fashionable, fearless, and entirely unforgettable.
