Naomi Ackie Reveals Former Manager Suggested Wearing Wigs To Look More Mixed Race

Naomi Ackie's Former Manager Hinted That If She Looked Mixed-Race, It Would Help Her Career - Parade

“Imagine being told that your natural hair could be standing between you and your next opportunity.

British actress Naomi Ackie recently shared a disturbing experience from the early years of her career. While struggling to advance in auditions, she said her former manager suggested she wear wigs with softer curls to make herself look mixed-race.

When Ackie asked if that was the intention, the answer was yes.

She eventually tried wearing the wigs and revealed that, unfortunately, the change helped her career prospects.

Her experience highlights a troubling reality: beauty standards in the entertainment industry can pressure Black women to alter features that are naturally theirs just to fit someone else’s expectations.

And this issue extends beyond one actress. Black performers have spoken about discrimination involving natural hairstyles, limited access to stylists who understand their hair, and the expectation to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards.

Natural Afro-textured hair is not unprofessional, unpolished, or something that needs to be softened to deserve representation.

Talent should determine opportunity, not how closely someone’s natural features align with another person’s idea of beauty.

Ackie’s story is a reminder that representation means more than putting diverse faces on screen. It also means creating an industry where people can show up as themselves without feeling that their identity is a disadvantage.
