“In 1939, 12-year-old Opal Lee watched her family’s world change after a racist mob of hundreds attacked their home in Fort Worth, Texas, simply because a Black family had moved into a predominantly white neighborhood.

The mob destroyed the family’s belongings and burned their home, forcing them to leave the property they had purchased. For decades, the land remained a painful reminder of the racism that had driven them away.

Then, in 2024, history came full circle.

At 97, Lee reclaimed her family’s former lot, purchasing it for just $10 from Trinity Habitat for Humanity. With the support of community partners, HistoryMaker Homes built her a new house on the very same land at no cost to her.

The home was more than a place to live. It became a powerful symbol of restoration, resilience, and a community choosing to answer hatred with love.

Known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Lee has spent years fighting for racial justice, including advocating for Juneteenth to become a federal holiday.

Eighty-five years after her family was forced out, Opal Lee returned home.

Her story reminds us that while the past cannot be erased, its legacy can be met with courage, justice, and hope.
