Dr. Alexandra Bastiany is recognized as Canada’s first Black woman interventional cardiologist, breaking barriers in a highly specialized field where women and Black physicians have historically been underrepresented.
Born and raised in Montreal to Haitian parents, Dr. Bastiany completed her medical, internal medicine and cardiology training at the Université de Montréal, where she also became the Faculty of Medicine’s first Black valedictorian. She later completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology in Alberta.
Interventional cardiology focuses on minimally invasive procedures used to diagnose and treat certain heart and vascular conditions, including procedures that can address blocked arteries without traditional open-heart surgery.
But her impact extends beyond the catheterization lab. Dr. Bastiany has also used her platform to advocate for greater diversity in medicine and to encourage more women and young people from underrepresented communities to pursue careers in science and healthcare.
A history-making career. A heart for community. And a reminder that representation can change what the next generation believes is possible.
