Paula Hammond Makes History As First Woman To Lead MIT’s School Of Engineering At 62

At 62, Paula T. Hammond has officially made history as the first woman to serve as Dean of MIT’s School of Engineering, assuming the role on January 16, 2026.

A Detroit native, Hammond’s journey in science and engineering began with a strong foundation in education. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT, followed by a master’s degree from Georgia Tech, before returning to MIT to earn her PhD.

Now, after decades as a researcher, professor, department leader, and academic administrator, Hammond is leading one of the world’s most prestigious engineering schools.

Her appointment is a historic milestone not only for MIT, but for women and future generations pursuing careers in STEM. ✨
