More than 25 years later, Love & Basketball is still one of Black cinema’s most beloved love stories.
Released in 2000, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s feature directorial debut introduced audiences to Monica Wright and Quincy McCall, two childhood neighbors whose shared love for basketball follows them through ambition, heartbreak, competition, and love.
Starring Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps, the film did more than give us a memorable romance. It gave us a complex Black woman determined to pursue her dreams without losing herself along the way.
That’s part of what continues to make Love & Basketball resonate decades later. Monica and Quincy didn’t have a perfect love story. They had growing pains, competing dreams, and moments that forced both of them to decide who they wanted to become.
And somehow, through all four quarters, the story still reminds us why some movies never leave the culture.
Is Love & Basketball one of the greatest Black romance films of all time? 👀
