Spain Wants 10,000 Volunteers to Drink Wine Every Day for 4 Years

Spain has launched one of the largest long-term alcohol health studies ever conducted.

Researchers will follow around 10,000 adults aged 50 to 75 over four years to better understand how moderate wine consumption compares to complete abstinence. Participants who already drink alcohol in moderation will either consume one small glass of wine per day or avoid alcohol entirely, allowing scientists to track differences in heart health, dementia risk, mental wellbeing, cancer rates, and overall longevity.

The study is led by the University of Navarra, funded by the European Union, and notably not backed by the wine industry. It also does not encourage non-drinkers to start drinking. Instead, it aims to provide clearer, evidence-based answers to a long-debated public health question about alcohol and long-term health.
