Artist Theaster Gates has been commissioned to create a major new installation for the Obama Presidential Center—one that centers Black women and celebrates their beauty, history, and cultural power. Drawing from archival materials and lived narratives, the work continues Gates’ practice of honoring Black life through art rooted in memory and preservation.
An institution meant to remember the past is also making space to honor those who have always shaped it.
