St. Andrew High School for Girls (SAHS) in Jamaica is facing backlash after announcing that students are no longer allowed to wear laid edges or styled baby hairs on campus.
In a viral Instagram post, the school declared: “Absolutely NO EDGES” and used a graphic of cartoon students alongside the now-infamous line
“Curtains belong in the house, not on foreheads.”
The rule, which the school says is meant to keep girls “school-ready,” has sparked intense criticism. Detractors argue it’s not really about discipline or neatness — but about suppressing Black expression and enforcing Eurocentric beauty standards on young Black girls.
Founded nearly 100 years ago, SAHS prides itself on tradition and discipline. However, many believe this new policy crosses the line. Styled edges are seen as more than a passing trend — they’re widely recognized as a global symbol of Black culture, pride, and creativity.
