
Dr. Norman C. Francis, a towering figure in civil rights and education, has passed away at the age of 94.
He served as president of Xavier University of Louisiana for nearly 50 years, becoming the institution’s first Black president and shaping generations of leaders through his vision and commitment to excellence. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Dr. Francis was not only a trailblazer in education, but a national voice for justice and equity.
His legacy includes integrating Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, advising eight U.S. presidents, and co-founding Liberty Bank and Trust Co., now one of the nation’s largest Black-owned banks.
He is remembered as a devoted family man, a servant leader, and a giant whose impact will be felt for generations.
