Africa’s Hidden Winter: Snow Covers Lesotho and the Atlas Mountains

It’s snowing in Africa! On July 3–4, 2025, Lesotho’s Afriski Mountain Resort recorded nearly 10 cm of fresh snow, turning the highlands into a full winter scene with ski lifts running and slopes open. Just a few weeks earlier, on June 9, another storm dropped over 14 cm in the same region. Meanwhile, the Atlas Mountains in Morocco saw their own snow days this year — with snowfall reported on January 5–6 and again on February 4, blanketing peaks across the north.

Africa is full of surprises — from Saharan dunes to snow-capped mountains. Snowfall isn’t rare in high elevations like Lesotho, South Africa’s Drakensberg, or Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. It’s a side of the continent many never see, but one worth knowing. 🌍❄️
