Meet Dr. William Conan Davis — The First Black PhD from the University of Idaho & Co-Creator of Dasani Water

Long before his name was widely known, Dr. William Conan Davis was quietly shaping modern science—and breaking barriers along the way.

In 1965, Davis became the first Black man to earn a PhD from the University of Idaho, marking a historic milestone in American academia. But his impact didn’t stop there. As a research chemist and professor, he co-created the formula for Dasani bottled water for Coca-Cola, contributed to the development of instant mashed potatoes, soft-serve ice cream, industrial glue, and helped standardize medical tests for insulin and growth hormones.

Published more than 20 times, Davis’ work touched everyday life in ways few people realize—yet his name remains largely absent from the mainstream narrative of innovation. His legacy stands as a reminder that many of the systems and products we rely on today were built by minds history too often overlooks.
