Born in 1900 in Mississippi, Lillian Beckley Wheeler moved to Colorado in search of opportunity and education. In 1943, at age 42, she made history by becoming the first Black woman ever licensed as a barber in the state of Colorado.
She went on to open Mrs. Wheeler’s Barbershop inside Dahlia Square — one of America’s largest Black-owned shopping centers — where she worked for over 40 years, mentoring future barbers and redefining what it meant to build a life through skill and service.
Her legacy reminds us: barbering isn’t just about style — it’s about freedom, ownership, and community.
