Actively Black’s NYFW Experience Presented by Mielle Organics Delivers a Historic Night for Black Culture at Sony Hall

New York, NY — September 15, 2025 — Actively Black turned New York Fashion Week into a cultural milestone with its powerful showcase “This Is Not a Fashion Show,” presented by Mielle Organics at Sony Hall.

The evening celebrated Black excellence, resilience, and legacy—blending fashion, history, and unforgettable storytelling.

Icons on the Runway

Red carpet arrivals included Lauryn Hill, Dapper Dan, Tyrese, Ghostface Killah, Naturi Naughton, and Dascha Polanco, setting the tone for a historic night. Inside, civil rights legacies came to life as Dr. Bernice A. King and Ilyasah Shabazz walked in collaborative pieces, honoring their families’ enduring impact.

Historic figures including Ruby Bridges, Cecil J. Williams, Tommie Smith, John Carlos, and Ben Haith were honored with standing ovations and emotional tributes.

Cultural Collaborations

Actively Black spotlighted stunning collaborations with:

  • Basquiat (led by Lisane Basquiat)
  • Bob Marley capsule (introduced by Sara Marley)
  • A tribute to Michael Jackson’s legacy

The “Black Women Are Superheroes” collection shined with leaders and athletes such as Valeisha Butterfield Jones, T’ea Cooper, Bozoma Saint John, Cari Champion, and Monica McNutt.

Additional highlights included a salute to HBCUs by Terrence J, a Harlem Globetrotters tribute, and a surprise reunion of AJ & Free, celebrating 25 years of BET’s 106 & Park.

More Than Fashion

Founder Lanny Smith underscored the mission:

“Being pro-Black means honoring our ancestors, uplifting our communities, and reminding the world that our stories and style are indispensable to global culture.”

The night ended with a joyful gender reveal, as Smith and co-founder Bianca Winslow announced they are expecting a baby boy in December 2025.
