Happy Chairteenth, The Montgomery, Alabama Riverfront Brawl Went Down 2 Years Ago Today

Two years ago today, the #MontgomeryBrawl made headlines and sparked nationwide conversation.
The now-viral incident began when a pontoon boat blocked a riverboat from docking at the Montgomery riverfront. A Black dock worker attempting to do his job was attacked by several white individuals from the pontoon boat.

What followed was a powerful moment of community defense, as multiple Black men and women came to the worker’s aid, escalating the confrontation into a full-on brawl.

The event quickly spread across social media, inspiring reactions, memes, and reenactments. One unexpected symbol emerged from the chaos — a folding chair — which became an iconic representation of the incident and its cultural impact.
