Tanzania just passed a new law that bans foreigners from running certain small businesses.
Starting July 28, 2025, non-citizens are no longer allowed to open or renew businesses in 15 specific areas — including:
* Salons and barbershops
* Small retail shops
* Restaurants
* Mobile money booths
* Tour guiding
* Electronics and phone repair
* Crop buying directly from farms
* Cleaning services, and more
This move is meant to protect local jobs and make sure small business opportunities go to Tanzanian citizens.
🔒 Foreigners who already own businesses in these areas can only operate until their license expires — they won’t be allowed to renew.
🚫 Breaking the rules could lead to huge fines (over $3,800), jail time, or even deportation. And even Tanzanian citizens who help foreigners get around the law could also face legal trouble.
The government says this is part of a bigger plan to empower local entrepreneurs and keep the economy in Tanzanian hands.
