“Journalist and author Afua Hirsch challenges us to question an idea many people take for granted: what exactly do we mean when we talk about “Western civilization”?
In discussions about colonialism and identity, Hirsch explores how the concept of the West has been shaped not only by geography, but also by historical power structures, racial hierarchies, and ideas about whose culture is considered the norm.
For centuries, colonial narratives often positioned European cultures as superior while marginalizing the histories, knowledge, and contributions of other societies.
Questioning these narratives does not mean dismissing everything associated with the West. It means examining how these ideas developed, whose perspectives they center, and which histories have been overlooked.
Sometimes, decolonization begins with questioning the definitions we were taught to accept.
