Theresa Kachindamoto, Malawi’s first female Senior Chief, became one of Africa’s most recognized voices in the fight against child marriage.
Using her position as a traditional leader, Kachindamoto challenged long-standing practices in her communities, working with families, local leaders, schools, NGOs, and international partners to protect girls and help them return to education.
Her impact was extraordinary. According to the United Nations, more than 3,500 child marriages were annulled under her leadership, giving thousands of children the opportunity to reclaim their childhoods and continue their education.
Her advocacy also contributed to the national movement that strengthened Malawi’s laws against child marriage. Today, the country’s legal minimum age for marriage is 18.
Kachindamoto’s legacy is a powerful reminder that tradition and culture can evolve and that leadership can change the future for an entire generation.
