The iconic checkered pattern associated with the “Ghana Must Go” bag has been reimagined as a contemporary polo shirt by French streetwear brand 4 The People.
For decades, the familiar woven bag has carried a much deeper meaning across West Africa and the diaspora. Its popular nickname became closely linked to the mass expulsion of undocumented immigrants from Nigeria in 1983, when many displaced Ghanaians used similar bags to carry their belongings home.
Today, a symbol once associated with displacement, migration and resilience continues to take on new life through art and fashion.
With this latest design, 4 The People transforms the recognizable pattern into streetwear, sparking another conversation about how cultural symbols evolve and who gets to tell their stories.
What was once used to carry belongings is now carrying a whole new cultural conversation.
