Malawi’s First Female Ngoni Chief Took a Stand— Ending 850 Child Marriages

Chief Theresa Kachindamoto of Malawi has become a global symbol of grassroots leadership and courage.

As a traditional leader, she took decisive action against child marriage—annulling hundreds of unions, removing village heads who failed to comply with the law, and working directly with communities to return young girls to school.

Her efforts helped accelerate national conversations around child protection and contributed to strengthening laws that set the legal marriage age at 18.

Beyond policy, her work represents a powerful shift: using cultural authority not to preserve harmful practices, but to protect the next generation.

Her story is a reminder that real change often begins at the community level—led by those willing to challenge the norm.
