Trump’s Executive Order Pauses Lifesaving HIV Treatment Program For 180 Days

According to reports, Pepfar, a program that distributes critical HIV medication to over 50 countries, has been paused for review, potentially jeopardizing the health of millions and putting Americans at risk.

The New York Times is reporting that as a result of President Trump’s executive order on foreign aid, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, known as Pepfar, a $7.5 billion program overseen by the State Department, has been paused.

The President ordered that all foreign aid programs be paused for review which can take up to 180 days.

This program has distributed life saving HIV medication to at least 25 million people more than 50 countries around the world.

This work has helped to combat the HIV epidemic. Pausing this kind of work can jeopardize the health of millions and could eventually put Americans in danger.

“Any prolonged pause in funding could disrupt H.I.V. treatment programs, leading to treatment interruptions, rise of drug-resistant H.I.V.,” said Jirair Ratevosian, the former chief of staff for Pepfar.
