The African Union commemorates Africa Day 2025 with a renewed call to justice, unity, and shared progress.
This year’s theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” honours the memory of those who suffered under slavery and colonialism, while asserting the right of Africa and its diaspora to truth, justice, and restoration.
“While justice and reparations remain long overdue. Africa will not be held hostage by the pain of its past. The continent is steadily building a future of peace, prosperity, and integration.” says H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AUC.
The President of Ghana 🇬🇭 John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his strong support for reparations for Africa and the African diaspora. In his message marking Africa Union Day, Mahama called for a united continental front in demanding reparative justice for the historical injustices of slavery, colonialism, and exploitation.
Mahama emphasized that reparations are not merely about financial compensation, but about restoring dignity, addressing systemic inequality, and rewriting the global narrative about Africa and its people.
He praised ongoing continental efforts to advance the cause, urging African leaders to remain steadfast in their commitment to justice and equity for all African descendants.
His message adds to growing calls across the continent for reparations, positioning Africa as a powerful voice in global conversations around historical accountability and redress.
