This is Foundational EMS History — But Did You Ever Learn It?

They trained the first paramedics in America.

And most of us never learned their name.

In 1967, the Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh changed emergency medicine forever. 🚑

Founded to serve a predominantly Black neighborhood, they:
• Introduced advanced paramedic training
• Provided care beyond basic first aid
• Set the standard for modern EMS systems

Yet their story is rarely centered in EMT or medic programs.

Black innovation didn’t just contribute to emergency medicine.
It helped build it.
