Created by and starring Robert Townsend, the film is widely recognized as one of the first Black superhero movies in Hollywood—blending comedy, action, and social commentary at a time when Black heroes were rarely centered on the big screen.
It paved the way, even if it didn’t always get the credit it deserved.
