President Joe Biden posthumously pardoned Black nationalist Marcus Garvey, whose 1920s mail fraud conviction was argued by supporters as a move to politically suppress his growing influence. Garvey, a proponent of racial pride and a key inspiration for many civil rights leaders like Malcolm X, was deported to Jamaica after his conviction. He later died in London in 1940. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. praised Garvey for instilling dignity and pride in millions of Black people on a mass scale.
